11/01/2022 Empty Sydney

We're not the only people staying at home or taking all our socialising outdoors.

Sydneyites, having been robustly exhorted by their politicians to exercise personal responsibility, went ahead and did just that: everybody stayed home or had picnics in the park and at the beach.

"No, not like that!" said the politicians.  "Go out and spend money!"

No thank you, said Sydney, and stayed at home so they could visit Grandma next weekend.  Some of them did a spot of online shopping while they were at home.  The majority of them decided to save their money, put it under their mattresses, and went to Youtube for knitting lessons instead.

A family member works in retail at Big Shopping Centre #1. "Close early," said the boss.  "We've only had two customers all day."

We went to the movies at Big Shopping Centre #2 on New Year's Day. The car park was empty.  So was the cinema (almost) which was a Very Good Thing from an infection prevention point of view.

"We're shut too," said Centrelink.  "Don't expect anything from us."        "Don't worry," said Sydney.  "We don't."

The fan in our house gave up the ghost: it stopped fanning, got very hot, and smelt even hotter.  Not wanting to have to deal with a future flaming fan , we went to Big Shop to buy a new one.

Big Shop was empty too.  If I were Big Shop, I would shut up shop and go home for a little holiday.

The new fan worked very well and made staying at home much easier as Sydney turned on hot sweaty weather.  Anyone would have thought that the weather was colluding with the politicians to encourage Sydney to go to the air conditioned shops, but Sydney is made of sterner stuff.

Sydney is staying home or picnicking in the park.
