05/10/25 Lozärner Määs: Welcome To Autumn
The Lozärner Määs (Autumn Fair) opened yesterday and runs to October 12th, so for the remainder of my stay in Lucerne I have on my doorstep a bustling Autumn Fair as well as all the attractions of the old town and the river.
Roger and I explored the neighbourhood one slow walk at a time, even slower on the bits that had cobblestones.
Last night's weather sprinkled a frosting of snow over Mt Pilatus, which also sported a plume of cloud as sunshine came and went. I had my eyes on that mountain which was accessed in part by the steepest cog railway in the world. If/when my resident invalid could be left on his own for a day, I'll be off to do some mountain-topping.
I went out for walks on my own, photographing pretty painted buildings;
And fountains, of which Lucerne had many. They all doubled as drinking fountains too, allowing me to fill my water bottle with potable aqua from the mouth of gargoyles or other fantastical beasts.
Darkness transformed the fair from a drab collection of rides and overpriced snack shacks in a car park to a wonderful fairyland of lights and splendour. Crowds of tourists and locals swirled through the alleyways: lovers bought each other silly stuffed animals; teens performed complex courting rituals on the scary rides; and toddlers demonstrated that tantrum is a universal language when tired and over stimulated.
