Japan Thoughts: Best of Manhole Covers

I bring you the best of Japanese manhole covers: a hidden secret which will have you running around cities and towns in Japan, searching for novelty manhole covers.

Tokyo:

A solid effort, but really as I became more learned in the variety of manhole covers I feel Tokyo could have done better.

Karuizawa:

Karuizawa upped the ante: a recognisable mountain theme with colours added for extra pop.

Osaka:

Now we were talking. Osaka had Expo 25 to get excited about, there was Osaka Castle and a waterfall for Minoh National Park, not to mention the canal boats and bridges of Dotonbori. Well done Osaka!

Matsuyama:

Another good effort, adding the colours was a nice touch.  I liked the flowers but I didn't understand the green alien theme.

Hiroshima:

Hiroshima outdid itself with variety, although I didn't see a single carp manhole cover, which was disappointing.

And I didnt understand this one at all.

Nagasaki:

It was all about the flowers in Nagasaki.

Fukuoka:

Fukuoka did OK in the manhole cover department, given I was there for less than 24 hours. Not that I understood the theme of this one;

but this was easy, Fukuokas big new civic building.

Now that I'm in South Korea I've been stalking manhole covers and have so far been sadly disappointed. South Korea may excel in many areas but Japan is definitely the winner in the creative manhole cover stakes.
